About

Real Dogs. Real Training. Real Results.

At Dog Training Toolshed, we’re not here to sell you obedience—we’re here to help you build a relationship. One based on trust, clarity, and joy.

Founded in regional Victoria by veterinary nurse and certified trainer Emily Cardwell, Dog Training Toolshed was born from a deep belief: that dogs deserve to be understood, not controlled—and that dog carers deserve support, not shame.

We don’t just train dogs. We teach humans. We prevent problems before they start. We offer solutions that feel realistic, respectful, and deeply effective. From puppyhood to senior care, we’re with you at every step—whether you’re starting out, starting over, or just want to deepen the bond with your dog.

Meet Emily – Founder, Educator, and Dog Nerd

Hi, I’m Emily—and I’m the human behind Dog Training Toolshed.

After years nursing in vet clinic, I saw how much behaviour impacts a dog’s well-being. So I combined my medical background with positive training methods to bridge the gap between health and behaviour, and give dogs (and their humans!) the tools to live happier, more connected lives together. I’ve seen firsthand how anxiety in dogs can lead to misunderstandings, mislabeling, and often—heartbreaking outcomes that could’ve been prevented.

That’s why I created a training business rooted in compassion and backed by clinical insight.

As an IMDT-Certified Trainer with a Certificate IV in Canine Behaviour & Training, I’m committed to science-backed, force-free methods that improve real-life outcomes. That includes everything from calmer vet visits, to safer interactions at home, to walking down the street without stress.

More than anything, I want my clients to feel seen, supported, and empowered—not overwhelmed by jargon or judgment. Training should feel good. It should make sense. And it should strengthen your bond with your dog—not strain it.

Our Mission

To provide pet carers with the tools they need to raise confident, well-adjusted dogs—through kindness, clarity, and expert support.

We do this through:

From our canine adventure course to our cooperative care programs, we’re redefining what training looks like—and making it fun, flexible, and effective.

Our Values

At Dog Training Toolshed, values aren’t just words on a page. They guide every decision, every session, and every client experience.

Why We’re Different

Plenty of dog trainers can show you how to teach a sit or drop.

Here’s what we do that sets us apart:

  • Clinical Insight – Our founder’s background in veterinary care means we understand health-based behaviour, stress signals, and how to support dogs in medical settings.
  • Customised Support – We don’t follow scripts. We follow your dog. Sessions evolve in real-time to meet individual needs.
  • Positive Reinforcement – No fear, pain, or intimidation. Ever. Just science-backed kindness and practical strategies that work.
  • Whole-Dog Training – Obedience is the by-product of trust and wellbeing—not the goal. We support the full emotional, physical, and behavioural health of your dog.

Our Facilities

We operate out of dedicated indoor and outdoor training areas purpose-built for comfort, safety, and learning. Whether it’s rainy day puppy school or open-air enrichment sessions, our space is designed with your dog’s best experience in mind.

Our clients consistently tell us they feel welcomed, safe, and seen—and that’s exactly how we want you (and your dog) to feel from the moment you arrive.
